The Iron Man competition is a very prestigious event where the competitors are put through a rigorous series of trials to show their strength. When you think of the Iron Man, you think of a very tough man, not someone who has to learn how to finish the events.
But one Pittsburgh lawyer by day had to learn to swim before the start of the Iron Man competition in 2005. Todd Hollis had dreamed of participating in the Iron Man, but had never gotten around to learning to swim, one-third of the Iron Man events.
The Iron Man triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a standard 26.2 mile marathon. Held annually since 1978, the Iron Man triathlon was first mounted in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Hollis signed up for the Iron Man, and immediately signed up for swim lessons at the YMCA. Every day after work, Hollis took classes with the other first-time swimmers: children. At a formidable height of 6 feet and 2 inches and weighing 190 pounds, Hollis’ biggest complaint was that it was hard to learn to float.
Hollis trained vigorously, losing 50 pounds. When he actually competed in the Iron Man, Hollis placed 1,873rd out of 2,400 starters and 33rd out of 353 starters in his age group. His total time was 16 hours, 17 minutes and 29 seconds.
When Hollis is not training for competition, he practices criminal law.
